Weather Eye: Expect intense but scattered showers over next few days

Chalk up another fair weather day Monday with plenty of sunshine but highs were a bit below average at 68 degrees. There were also cumulus clouds about, but no rain was measured in Vancouver. In fact, Monday was our 13th day without rainfall officially in Vancouver. Yes, I am aware some of you had a few downpours over the weekend, but they were widely scattered yet when falling one could wonder, hey weatherman, what’s going on?

Whenever you have cold air aloft and warm May sunshine shining down at us, those cumulus clouds can build, turn dark and whatever moisture is inside it tumbles down to Earth. I had reports of the Battle Ground area receiving a tenth of an inch or more of rain. Most likely our foothills measured more.

I mentioned earlier here that the jet stream is streaming through southern British Columbia and that continues to be the case. I also mentioned that it could sag farther southward, and we could get a healthy dose of rain. That will be the case today and Wednesday. Expect up to a quarter- to one half-inch of rain in the county. Showers Wednesday could be intense enough to drop hail and maybe a clap of thunder. Like Saturday, showers will be scattered.

Although it will be our first good rainfall in three weeks, it may not be enough to satisfy weekly irrigation amounts for lawn and garden. Monday was our 13th day without measurable rainfall in Vancouver at the official weather station at Pearson Airfield. That streak will come to an end today.

Memorial Day holiday is rapidly coming our way and as things look now, I think we will have a fair holiday with highs of 65 to 75 degrees and partly sunny skies. Rain will be close to our north but with a little bit of luck our friends and neighbors in Puget Sound and southern British Columbia will be dashing for cover.

I don’t see any hot weather heading our way the remainder of the month as the weather pattern remains quite stable as it is now. Enjoy your week.
