Weather Eye: Delightful mild, dry May weather continues this week

We had a new record high temperature for Friday, May 10 in Vancouver. It was 90 degrees, surpassing the old record by 1 degree set back in 1941. On Saturday it was hot again, but we failed to officially reach 90 degrees and finished with 89 degrees, short of the record.

Mother’s Day was perfect with highs at 80 degrees as predicted and turned out to be a wonderful day. I hope you all had an opportunity to get out and enjoy the weather with friends and family.

With the hot weather Friday and the impressive appearance of the northern lights, it was perfect weather to sit outside and view this amazing phenomenon. It is a rare event here in our position on the globe and I can honestly say I have never in my lifetime observed it like this. What were the odds of having clear skies all night in early May?

Our local weather observer, traveler and professional photographer, Tyler Mode of Battle Ground, posted this comment on his social media page: “Dreams realized! I’ve seen the aurora dozens of times, it’s the main reason I travel to Alaska every year. But there’s something special about seeing it in your own backyard. A warm breeze blowing, frogs croaking and an amazing show that not only was seen to the north but was virtually in every direction.”

All I can say is our delightful mild and dry May weather will continue this week with highs in the 70s, except about 80 on Wednesday. There may be variable clouds at times throughout the week. Computer forecast models for the most part keep us warm and dry through the coming weekend. There are some, however, that want to bring a cool trough of low pressure with showers and cooler temperatures. Right now, I’ll let them hash it out and if the majority rules otherwise, then we’ll update the extended forecast a bit.

Vancouver’s average mean temperature so far this month is 1 degree above average and in the rainfall department we are above average as well, about three-quarters of an inch. Last year on this date, it was 91 degrees for a high temperature.

Take good care, everyone.
