Letter: Orchestra is a local treasure

By Pat Sjolander, Vancouver

I recently had the pleasure of listening to the music of the Ne Plus Ultra Jass Orchestra at Providence Academy. I thoroughly enjoyed the jazz performed by outstanding musicians who appeared to be having a wonderful time entertaining the audience.

Although the focus of the evening was on 1920s dance music, only a dozen couples were dancing. Most of the audience was there to listen to jazz and to enjoy the orchestra leader, Sammuel Murry-Hawkins, explain the musical history, sing along with some of the selections, and recognize the talent of each member of the orchestra as they performed their solos.

The Ne Plus Ultra Jass Orchestra is part of the Historic Music Preservation Project that is sponsored by the National Trust. The orchestra plays once a month at Providence Academy, starting at 7 p.m. and ending promptly at 9 p.m. The Ne Plus Ultra Jass Orchestra is another treasure unique to Vancouver that everyone is invited to enjoy.
