Letter: Keep protests peaceful

By Gordon Gammell, Vancouver
Published: May 8, 2024, 6:00am

I support the right of the protesters on college campuses to voice their opinion of the war in Gaza or any other cause whether it is right or wrong. What disturbs me to the point of anger and sadness is the unnecessary destruction of property they seem to think is also their right and to hinder their fellow students from attending classes and allowing the schools to function normally.

Locally, the pictures of graffiti in the Portland State library are terrible. Although it was nice to see one scrawling asking for the books not to be destroyed. How considerate. The protests should be peaceable and responsible while voicing and demonstrating an opinion, not for irresponsible acts of violence and destruction. There should be appropriate consequences for those who act irresponsibly.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
