Letter: Support for Trump is nonsensical

Troy Miller, head of the National Religious Broadcasters, an evangelical Christian organization, recently stated, “I can say, from all of the people I meet with and talk to … (Donald) Trump has this appeal. People feel he understands them. Even though some of his life stuff doesn’t fit into their personal lifestyle or morality, they still feel like he gets them.”

Why do so many evangelical Christians support Trump? Some possible reasons:

  • They are drawn to black-and-white “me vs. you” thinking, like Trump’s.
  • They are not inclusive and like to separate the saved from the sinners; for Trump it’s the winners vs. the losers.
  • They lack self-awareness and demonstrate limited emotional intelligence dealing with those outside of their narrow belief system, just like Trump.

This is quite unlike Christianity’s founder who said:

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

“Why do you call me good? No one is good but one, that is, God.”

Jesus made the point many times that he was not operating with political aims, a clear departure from Trump’s evangelical Christian supporters.
