Letter: School cuts are painful

By Gail Bigelow, VANCOUVER

It breaks my heart to see the deep cuts in Vancouver Public Schools. As a former labor leader, I naturally sympathize with the staff members who are being laid off. As a former CASA (court appointed special advocate) in Superior Court, I know full well how important healthy, well-run public education is to all of our children, and especially the most vulnerable among them. These deep cuts don’t bode well for our kids’ futures.

I am old enough to remember when Washington brought in the lottery. We were all promised, by those in power in our state government, that the lottery would fund education. As the lottery payouts grow into the millions, and beyond, so should the amount slated for school funding. Is that happening? Let’s find out.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
