Letter: When does life begin?

By Ronald Morrison, Vancouver

I’ve another answer to the “when does life begin” question (Our Readers’ Views, March 14), one not constrained by the Christian Bible story. A woman’s reproductive process has “conception,” “embryo” and “fetus” as stages moving through. All are fully within the woman and completely of the woman. Her bodily systems provide singular governance of it. Reproduction from beginning to end is “as one” with the woman. Only when full delivery comes, and the infant takes its first breath, does a separate new life exist. This new person is acknowledged with a birth certificate, a legal document. This new person can be counted by the government for census purposes.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
