LONGVIEW — The teenager  stabbed last month at Longview’s Lake Sacajawea died Friday, officials say.

In a message shared with R.A Long High School staff and students, Brayden Barber, 16, died in a Portland area hospital a month and four days after being stabbed. Counseling services are available, and students are asked not to engage in social media that could impact the family, the message states.

The police say Johnson Mailos, 16, of Longview stabbed the teen in February at the city park.

Mailos is charged with first-degree attempted murder with a deadly weapon, and county prosecutors could not be reached Monday to see whether charges will be updated. Mailos is being tried as an adult and set to next appear in court April 4.

On Feb. 21, Barber was stabbed after being in two separate fights at Lake Sacajawea. As people fled from the scene, Mailos allegedly chased down Barber and stabbed him on the right side of his chest, according to witnesses who told police.

A police report states Barber sustained a stab wound that caused his lung to collapse and suffered blows to the head. He was transported from PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center by a LifeFlight helicopter to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital.

When Mailos was arrested, police found a 6-inch knife that had “trace amounts of blood” on the handle, according to court documents. Parts of the altercation was recorded and uploaded to social media, the same report states.
