Prep highlights: La Center’s Aseph tosses no-hitter in DH sweep

Austin Aseph pitched a no-hitter as La Center baseball opened Trico League play with a doubleheader sweep at Columbia of White Salmon on Tuesday.

Aseph struck out 11 and walked two over seven innings as the Wildcats won the opener 6-0.

La Center then completed the sweep with a 15-1 win in six innings.

In th opener, Wyatt Bethje singled in a run in the top of the first. Wyatt Eiesland scored on an error as the Wildcats doubled their lead in the second.

La Center then tacked on a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings.

That was more than enough support for Aseph. The junior right-hander needed just 82 pitches over 23 batters, throwing 55 strikes.

In the nightcap, Caden Taylor went 3 for 5 with four RBI and a triple. Eiesland also tripled and scored three runs.

Smith Stimmel pitched five strong innings, allowing three hits, two walks and striking out eight.

Stars of the day

  • Jared Forner, Camas baseball, went 2 for 2 with three runs, three RBI and three stolen bases in a 10-2 win over Garfield.
  • Cam Hern, Prairie baseball, went 2 for 3 with a double, two stolen bases in a 3-1 win over Mountain View. He also pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn the save after Isaac Watson allowed three hits over six innings.
  • Logan Barker, Kelso baseball, allowed one hit over six innings with six strikeouts and no walks in a 10-0 win over Heritage as the Hilanders improved to 7-0 this season.
  • Quinn Aubrey and Renee Waddle, Columbia River softball. The 9-1 hitters in the Rapids’ lineup each had three hits, combined for seven RBI and six runs scored. Aubrey drove in the go-ahead run with two outs in eighth, Waddle followed with a two-run home run, her second homer of the game, and River beat Evergreen 13-10.
  • Stevie Jones, R.A. Long softball, pitched a four-hit shutout at Castle Rock and was 2 for 4 with two doubles and a run scored in the 8-0 victory.
  • Jocelyn Kender, Seton Catholic softball, pitched a three-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and one walk and was also 2 for 3 at the plate with a triple and two RBI and two runs scored in the 12-0 win over Hudson’s Bay.
  • Jared Childers, R.A. Long baseball, went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI in a 7-4 win over Washougal.
  • Will Goth, Evergreen baseball, went 2 for 3 and scored the only run in a 1-0 win over King’s Way Christian.
  • Teddy Wieczorek, Seton Catholic baseball, went a combined 2 for 4 with five runs and three RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Castle Rock.
  • Jacob McManus, Columbia River boys track and field, won the 1,600 meters in a meet against Hockinson and Woodland with a personal-best time of 4 minutes, 23.20 seconds. That ranks second in Class 2A statewide this season.
  • Sam Soto, Seton Catholic boys soccer, had a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win over Columbia-White Salmon as the Cougars improved to 4-0-0 in Trico League play.
  • Pablo Sanchez Barbosa, Heritage boys soccer, scored two goals in a 4-0 win over Prairie as the Timberwolves improved to 6-0-0 overall this season.
  • Leonel Herrera, Fort Vancouver boys soccer, had a goal and an assist as the Trappers shutout Ridgefield 2-0 to give the Spudders their first 2A GSHL regulation loss this season.
  • Cooper Schneider, Camas boys soccer, had a goal and assist in the Papermakers’ 2-1 win over Skyview in the 4A GSHL opener.
  • Nolan Dacumos-Brady, Mountain View boys soccer, scored two goals in the Thunder’s 3-0 win against Kelso.
  • Grant Clayton, Hockinson boys soccer, scored the match-winner in the second half as the Hawks beat Hudson’s Bay 1-0.
