The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office believes the remains of John T. Guffey of Maryland have been found near the Sunset Falls Campground, according to a Monday news release from the agency.
The remains were found March 18 by a mountain biker who discovered a human skull near the campground, according to the sheriff’s office. Law enforcement subsequently found additional human remains.
Although the sheriff’s office has not made a positive identification and the investigation is ongoing, officials said they believe the remains are Guffey, who has been missing for nearly a year. Guffey’s van was located in the area in April 2023, the agency said.
Despite several organized searches for Guffey at the time, he was not found.
Skamania County officials believe there is no risk to the public.
