Letter: Focus on excellence, merit

An old fashioned, Soviet-style Commissar is currently stalking the resumes of people seeking employment or advancement in public positions at universities, hospitals and government. No longer are excellence, merit and accomplishment the primary factors in positions where federal funds are allocated. Heavily weighted “diversity statements” are now pivotal to the selection process.

Only if you are willing to reject colorblind equality and are happy to divide people into affinity groups based on immutable physical characteristics can applicants’ acceptability be judged. This viewpoint discrimination is exactly what dictatorial, repressive regimes have practiced for decades. It’s really quite simple; just ask yourself, “What does a college professor, health scientist or government bureaucrat look like?” This is the crux of the diversity-equity-inclusion scheme and the enemy of common sense.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
