Ridgefield’s seventh-inning rally was cut short by an unusual double play in a 4-3 loss to Olympic of Bremerton in a non-league softball game Saturday at the Ridgefield Outdoor Recreation Center.
With one out in the seventh, Kaylen Wingerd doubled to score Tava Whitlow from second, cutting Olympic’s lead to 4-3.
Mallory Vancleave lined a single to right field. While attempting to stretch the hit into a double, Vancleave was thrown out at second base.
Wingerd, who had held up at third base after Vancleave’s hit, then tried to score the tying run, but the Trojans made the clean relay home to throw out Wingerd at the plate.
Whitlow went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Wingerd was 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI, and Vancleave was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
