Weather Eye: String of 70-degree days to get underway on Friday

Today despite the official start of spring on the calendar being days away, it will be shining in all its glory. We begin the much-awaited warmup and enjoy the blue skies and sunshine. It was supposed to be chilly this morning with frosty conditions, but no worries, the skies will clear and the string of 70-degree days will commence on Friday.

I expect 70 degrees or better Friday through Monday giving us four days in succession, which is rare in March. The last time we had a similar weather pattern was in 2005 when we recorded three days of 70-degree weather. It’s been a while. I don’t see a high of 80 degrees despite the presence of offshore winds. As I shared earlier in the week, we have only had two days with 80 degrees as a high temperature here in Vancouver since 1896. I wouldn’t mind if we added another, however.

In contrast to our warm weather arriving on scene, our faithful weather observer from Battle Ground, Tyler Mode, is on holiday in Alaska. While watching the aurora borealis Tuesday he noted it was a frigid 12 degrees below zero. At least he mentioned the winds were calm. Still plenty of cold air in the far north.

So, what is the plan after Monday? We place those 70-degree temperatures in the record books and keep them there for memories as we return to an unsettled weather pattern more typical for late March. That means more clouds, a chance of light rain or showers, fresh snow in the ski areas and seasonal temperatures back in the 50s.

The warmer weather on tap will surely help the average mean temperature come up a bit as it was running 3 degrees below normal so far this month on Wednesday. It has been a chilly month.

With no rain in the forecast for several days, we will drop further behind and place pressure on nature to catch us up in the remaining days of March.

In 2023, our last freezing temperature in Vancouver for the winter season was March 17. This year I think we are vulnerable to frost for a while as there is still plenty of snow on Silver Star Mountain.

I know it will be tempting this weekend to enhance that green thumb of yours but do planning, not planting.

Enjoy the pleasant weather.
