Letter: American voters face challenge

By Ralph Burke, Vancouver
Published: March 13, 2024, 6:00am

Although I consider myself an independent voter, the last time I voted Republican was for John McCain in the 2008 presidential primary, before he made his unfortunate selection of a vice president.

Today, the defeat of Donald Trump is probably the single most important challenge American voters have ever experienced.

I say this because at age 92, I am part of that rapidly diminishing group of Americans who lived during Adolf Hitler’s regime. I remember things no one should ever have to live through again. And today, Trump’s rambling rhetoric gives me instant recall.

President Joe Biden has already said that in the absence of Trump’s candidacy, he might not be running. Now he must do the right thing. Select someone like Gov. Gavin Newsom of California for his new running mate, and do it now. Such a sacrifice by all concerned could save our nation from certain disaster.
