Well, that’s it. Another 2A Greater St. Helens League basketball season has officially ended here in Southwest Washington. As a parent, educator and community member, I wanted to take the time to acknowledge everyone who makes the league happen.
Without the coaches, administrators, team managers, bus drivers and referees, the season would not happen. Without the announcers, school bands, students (shout out to the River spirit stick) and cheerleaders, the season would not have been as much fun. Without the reporters, we would not have detailed, minute-by-minute updates (thank you Tim Martinez, Micah Rice, and Meg Wochnick; your tireless work is appreciated and your every post is devoured).
The commitment of the players, along with all of these groups, is just phenomenal. We basketball fans here in Vancouver are incredibly lucky.
As I sat at almost every 2A game, I noted the sportsmanship from almost every team. I also noted the leadership. The coaches at Bay, Fort, Hockinson, Ridgefield, River, Woodland and Washougal deserve applause, gold medals and a raise.
Although winning is the desire, much is to be learned from all the other stuff too. To all of you involved in this league, thank you for making this season happen. Until next year.
