Letter: Trump is in control of Congress

Barbara Pierce has correctly described how the Republican members in Congress are aiding Putin (“Trump Republicans support Putin,” Our Readers’ Views, March 1). But the situation is even more dire.

Donald Trump, our twice-impeached ex-president now being tried under four indictments covering 91 crimes, is in control of our government. While there are some Republican members in Congress who do not support Trump, they will not say so, knowing that Trump will have them replaced in their primaries by candidates more to his liking.

So in the House, where Republicans are the majority, only actions dictated by Trump are taken. In the Senate, actions proposed by the Democratic majority are filibustered by Republicans taking orders from Trump.

So Trump is now preventing aid to Ukraine because he and a number of Republicans in Congress admire Putin. And control of our borders was prevented because Trump wants border chaos to use in his election campaign.

Trump’s control will be eliminated only if the November election seats Democrats in the House, Senate and White House and the Democrats in the Senate then cancel the filibuster. Recent polls indicate that this will happen if sufficient numbers of women vote in November.
