Letter: Don’t turn Trump into martyr

By Bruce L. Melkonian, VANCOUVER

Donald Trump’s legal problems seem endless. There’s a civil judgment against him for $454 million because he overstated the value of his New York real estate holdings, even though neither the state nor any banks suffered a financial loss. There’s civil judgment, in the amount of $83 million, for slander because he claimed that a woman lied when she accused him of rape. The statement may have been slanderous, but the amount of the award is utterly unreasonable.

Then there are the criminal cases. So what does all this mean?

It means we are in serious danger of making Donald Trump into a martyr. He may, in the minds of many, join such true martyrs as Lincoln, Gandhi, Joan of Arc, and of course, Jesus. This would enormously, and dangerously, increase his chance of once again being elected president.

I take a back seat to no one when it comes to distaste for Donald Trump, and I worry that these relentless attacks against the former president, whether justified or not, will, in the end, cause great harm to the United States.
