In a recent article (“Bi-state panel meets for first time to discuss establishing tolls on Interstate 5 Bridge,” The Columbian, Feb. 23) it stated officials are “considering reductions in tolls for low-income drivers and an exemption for all Native American tribes.”
In an age where readers and listeners of local and national news are deluged daily with calls for DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) in all aspects of our lives from our elected representatives, it appears incongruent that Native Americans may be exempt from paying tolls. If equity is the goal, wouldn’t it seem reasonable that all users of the new I-5 Bridge be subject to tolls?
