Yakima police are investigating the Friday shooting death of a 15-year-old girl.

Officers responded about 9:20 p.m. Friday to reports of gunshots near McGuinness Park, in the area of North 14th and Swan avenues, according to a Saturday news release. When they arrived, they found the girl dead from an apparent bullet wound.

Several people told police there had been an altercation in the neighborhood between rival gangs.

Police said the girl’s next of kin have been notified, but they did not release her name. The Yakima Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating the shooting.

Investigators say they are seeking the public’s help in finding the people involved. They encourage anyone with information that could help them identify a suspect to call the Major Crimes Unit at 509-728-1641. After regular business hours, call 911.
