About a month ago, my husband and I were eating pizza at a restaurant in Vancouver when he started to choke. I jumped up and started trying to do the Heimlich maneuver, but it wasn’t working. He was making a horrible noise as he attempted to breathe. I cried out, asking for help.
Then a young man was there, calm, confident and caring. He wrapped his arms around my husband, and after two quick thrusts, my husband yelled out and could breathe again. This handsome young man stood up, did what needed to be done and did so with quiet assurance. And then he walked to the counter, got his pizza and left.
Our hero happened to wear his hair in dreadlocks. We have read of many young Black women and men who have been punished at various schools for wearing their hair in braids, extensions, dreadlocks or other “ethnic” styles. People should be allowed to wear their hair as they want to, as long as it is clean. This young man wasn’t hampered in any way by his hair while he saved my husband’s life. And I thank God that he came to our aid — dreadlocks and all. Thank you so much, young man!
