Letter: Railroad hazards are overstated

By Michael McGinley, Washougal
Published: March 1, 2024, 6:00am

Ms. Kelly attempts to scare Clark County residents with fears of hazardous cargo on the railroad (“Speak up about railroad hazards,” Our Readers’ Views, Feb. 22), but to my knowledge the only new cargo is to be quarried rock for construction use.

Presently the railroad does haul some liquefied petroleum gas for local distribution; if that were banned it would mean the same quantity consumed locally would now be on our highways instead.

The Port of Vancouver railway is a local feeder route, integrated into our economy. It should not be confused with the heavy, fast freight trains seen on the main lines. I am a retired railroad civil engineer.
