Letter: It’s tough growing up in Alabama

By Debra di Piazza, Vancouver

Sweet home, Alabama: where frozen embryos are regarded as precious, living children, and have the fullest protection of the law. Alabama, that ranks 44th in education. Where more than 22 percent of children live in poverty. Where infant and maternal mortality rates are among the highest in the nation. Where the minimum wage is still $7.25 (because there is no state minimum wage, so they default to the embarrassingly low federal minimum), assuring that those born in poverty are likely to remain poor. Alabama, with the third-highest rate of gun violence and gun homicide in the country.

Listen to me, oh precious frozen babies: stay in your cryogenic cradles. You have it a lot better there than if you are actually born and grow up in Alabama.
