I read with both bemusement and sadness the “Jeers” for the traffic nightmares recently due to accidents on both the Interstate 5 Bridge and the I-205 Bridge (“Cheers & Jeers: Start of summer; traffic jams,” In Our View, June 24).
Bemusement was because I’m retired and typically don’t use the bridges south into Portland on weekday mornings and thus wasn’t even aware that this situation had occurred. And I reacted with sadness because anyone with half a brain has known that a third bridge between Vancouver and Portland should’ve already been built 10-15 years ago and an argument can be made that a fourth should at least be in the works right now.
Something like that, however, would require politicians of both parties and on both sides of the river to have some foresight and the ability to work together, something that obviously is sorely lacking in this region as the endless issues with the I-5 Bridge replacement attest to particularly in light of the fact that another drawbridge is actually under consideration.
