Letter: Posting commandments won’t help

It is rather ironic that conservative Christians are in favor of, and rejoicing over, the decision to post the Ten Commandments in all Louisiana schools. Don’t they realize that these were Jewish, handed down by a Jew, Moses, to a Jewish people?

Are you happy adopting a Jewish point of view? If you want to follow Christian rules, try the Beatitudes, that are both Christian and more recent. Sadly, posting and saying things in school really has no effect on the students. As a teacher, I watched how little saying the Pledge of Allegiance affected patriotism. I suspect that posting the Ten Commandments will have about the same effect.

If you want children to follow your beliefs, attend the church, synagogue or other center of worship of your choice regularly. Make sure your children come with you. Practice the examples at home as well … no more profanity at Trump rallies, etc. Don’t lie, gossip or bear false witness. Love your neighbor. Don’t judge. Be an example, but don’t assume posting something will solve your problems.
