Letter: Make arts center accessible

By Sue Tellock, Vancouver
Published: June 27, 2024, 6:00am

Regarding the recent article about a proposed arts center, Kathy McDonald stated that parking would be a “very walkable two blocks away” (“After years looking at downtown …,” The Columbian, June 20).

There are many people in the community who have the financial resources and the desire to attend an event at an arts center, but do not have the ability to walk two blocks. Parking is a critical consideration for any building or business. Why spend millions on something that only partly solves the problem?

A first-class venue should not have parking that is two blocks away and “walkable.” To build a structure without adequate, convenient parking could result in a “white elephant” that would be an embarrassment to the community and those involved in the planning of an arts center. Go back to the drawing board, please.
