YAKIMA — Firefighters from Yakima and Kittitas counties have contained a wildfire on the Yakima Training Center’s grounds.
The fire burned 4,000 acres — an area roughly the size of Gleed — on the east-central side of the sprawling garrison, YTC public affairs officer Paul Noel said. The fire was first reported around 3:05 p.m. Friday. One crew remains on scene to respond to hotspots.
YTC’s fire department put in a fourth alarm for assistance, and crews from East Valley, Selah, Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue, Yakima, Hanford, Yakima County Fire District 5, Naches, Highland and Vantage are on the scene, Noel said.
A helicopter from the Army’s 2nd Battalion 158th Aviation Regiment assisted with water drops, while a bulldozer crew carved out a a containment line, Noel said.
YTC has also asked for assistance from the state Department of Natural Resources, but Noel said the agency was unavailable to respond.
