WOODLAND — The Woodland City Council appointed member Carol Rounds mayor pro tem Monday to replace Monte Smith who resigned last month.

Rounds was selected in a 3-2 vote.

Council member Douglas Freimarck, Sr. said he believes Rounds is the best choice because she’s been with the council the longest and has a “good handle on protocol.”

“I think Melissa has a great deal of information that she always shares with everyone, and I think she would do a fine job,,” Freimarck said.

Council members Freimark, Rounds and JJ Burke voted for Rounds. Council members Gabe Huston and Melissa Doughty voted for Doughty.

Smith announced his resignation May 22, saying he would be moving out of Washington with his wife.

The city is taking applications from people interested in completing Smith’s term. To be eligible, residents must be registered voters who have lived in Woodland for at least one year. The appointment will be made by the Woodland City Council at a meeting later this year.

Applications close June 12.
