Letter: Reject Initiative 2117

By Amy Clark, VANCOUVER
Published: June 4, 2024, 6:00am

Initiative 2117 attempts to overturn the Climate Commitment Act. Proponents discuss increased costs caused by taxed industries returning costs to consumers. However, they omit the law’s benefits, short or long term.

Through the act, money returns to our communities: 1) $200 electric utility rebates to 750,000 low- and medium-income households in September 2024; 2) Grants to Vancouver Housing Authority to increase heat pumps and energy efficiency in large apartment complexes; 3) Grants to school districts for electric buses and charging to replace asthma-enhancing diesel buses; 4) Grants for trees in urban areas to reduce the impact of heat waves. These benefits are happening in our state now and in the immediate future.

Meanwhile, the act pushes greenhouse gas polluters to reduce emissions for the health and environmental benefit of all Washingtonians. Vote No on 2117 to move Clark County and Washington state toward a carbon-free, healthier future.
