Letter: War in Gaza is not the answer

I am a 74-year-old Jewish woman who attended Sunday school at Temple Beth Am in Chicago and faithfully donated my entire allowance every week to buy trees for the new state of Israel. I sang in the choir every Saturday, and participated in other activities on Wednesdays.

I understand that many Jews are pro-Israel and agree with Prime Minister Netanyahu’s prosecution of the war. I do not!

I know Hamas is holding hostages (as is Israel), and has murdered, raped and kidnapped approximately 1,300 Kibbutzim. There are no words to convey how horrific that is. Most people are righteously horrified by what happened.

However, revenge is not the answer. Bombing the Gaza Strip into oblivion cannot be the answer. Killing Palestinians, mostly women and children, is not the answer. Not allowing food, medical supplies, and other necessities to be trucked into Gaza, causing starvation, surgeries without anesthesia, and other horrific conditions is not the answer. Hamas will never be obliterated. This war will only create a larger and more militant fighting force.

It breaks my heart to see “my people” committing such atrocities, and my country supplying the weapons for Israel to continue this holocaust.
