Garbage truck falls in Longview sinkhole

Hairline crack in sewer line cited

LONGVIEW — A Waste Control garbage truck fell into a sinkhole Wednesday morning in a Longview alley.

The truck was in the alley between 11th Avenue and 12th Avenue near Maple Street.

Several feet of pavement collapsed while the truck paused by a bin, creating a hole large enough that both of the garbage truck’s back rear tires fell in and the vehicle was stuck.

Public Works Director Chris Collins said the sinkhole was caused by a hairline crack in the nearby sewer line, which over time leaked water into the ground and pulled dirt and sand out of the ground. Collins said sinkholes are fairly common in Longview but ones big enough to affect a truck were rare.

“As our system ages, and if adequate investment in the sewer system is not made, you will see more and more sinkholes progressing,” Collins said.

Collins said the city had replaced the sewer pipe and patched the pavement hole by Monday afternoon. The Waste Control truck was not damaged, according to the city.
