Letter: Reject Initiative 2117

I urge Washington voters to reject Initiative 2117. In 2021, the Climate Commitment Act was passed by the Legislature and enacted into law. The CCA, one of the nation’s landmark climate laws, puts a cap on carbon and makes major polluters pay for their climate pollution. Revenue from the CCA supports a host of programs that benefit Washington communities. A few examples are grants for sustainable farming and ranching, programs for wildfire prevention and fish habitat restoration, and help for low-income residents to pay their electric bills.

I-2117 is one billionaire’s attempt to overturn the CCA and shift the burden of paying for climate pollution from polluters back to you and me. Don’t believe its proponents’ arguments that passing I-2117 will save you money. In so many ways, that would be penny wise and pound foolish.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
