Gerry Parmantier’s recent letter about abortion (“Consider ‘choice,’ available services,” Our Readers’ Views, May 27) includes misinformation such as that “many women regret abortion choices”; 95 percent of them in a recent study did not (University of California, San Francisco).
In terms of resources available to women post-birth — well, that is highly varied. And generally “pregnancy support centers” across the country have been found to give women false information (I hope local ones don’t).
But my point is not to argue with Mr. Parmantier. My point is — whether to have a child or not is a very personal decision. It is one that should be between the mother, the doctor, and the father if he is involved in the relationship. There are many factors that lead to the decision to have a baby or to not have a baby — medical, financial, other children in the family, etc.
Let’s get government out of it — whether at the federal level, state level, county level, or city level. Abortions should be legal, safe, affordable and available to women, like any other medical procedure.
