Weather Eye: Rain Monday into Tuesday would be great news for firefighters

Pleasant seasonal weather will continue this weekend, with highs in the 80s. A weather system swinging through British Columbia will deepen enough to give us a good chance of steady light rain Monday, ending Tuesday. If it develops as some forecast models indicate, we could get a quarter inch of rain, and perhaps upward of a half inch in the mountains.

This would be great news, with wildfires blazing in Washington and Oregon. Not much would fall east of the mountains, but humidity and cooler temperatures would assist greatly. I don’t see any lightning erupting on the east side with the front, and it’s possible a little rain could fall in some areas. The downside is there will be strong westerly winds on the east slopes of the Cascades.

It would tamper the fire situation for a short time. However, that heat dome is forecast to head our way later next week, when we’ll push into the 90s once again. A warm start to the Clark County Fair.

The low-pressure system moving in on Monday is not uncommon for the end of July, but significant rain other than a thunderstorm is rare. I’m sure there would be no complaints from most folks, and the ground would be most receptive.

What was I writing about one year ago today? Here is my opening: “Picture-perfect weather continues, and with highs in the 80-85-degree range through the weekend, it can’t be beat. You may have heard that hotter weather is on the horizon later next week. Yes, I believe highs could approach 90 degrees.”
