Celebrate the natural world throughout the year. Here are four places to be inspired by nature’s gifts.

National Water Trails System

It’s a network of 22 river, lake and other waterway trails, designated as such by the U.S. Department of Interior. The system offers families vacation and recreational opportunities in scenic regions of the U.S. In southwest Ohio, families can access 291 miles of paddling, fishing and wildlife watching on three rivers and numerous smaller tributaries, including the Great Miami River, Stillwater River and Mad River, as well as Twin, Greenville and Buck creeks. All part of the Great Miami River Watershed Water Trail, you’ll also find whitewater and kayak parks, world-class fishing and more than 100 natural and urban parks in the region. Maps are available to help families locate the 117 public access points, obtain bike trail information, and plan an adventure.

Longwood Gardens (Kennett Square, Pa.)

Families are encouraged to explore the more than 1,000 acres of gardens, woodlands, meadows and fountains as well as a 4.5 acre conservatory that make up this Pennsylvania gem. Ask about family nature walks and scavenger hunts in the Children’s Garden, guided visits to a meadow and invigorating seasonal programs. Kids will want to scout for the dozens of whimsical animal statues that can be found throughout the garden. Visible in all sizes, shapes and colors, some are more than 100 years old. You’ll also find an entire garden area dedicated to the art of topiary. Learn how the pros train plants, shrubs and trees into shapes while marveling at more than 20 examples. During the warmer months, illuminated fountain performances offer visitors a 30-minute spectacle of light, music and water, an experience sure to delight the whole family.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden (Brooklyn, N.Y.)

Awash in color, scent and texture, gardens are a gift from the natural world. Toddler discovery, tree detective and family weekend programs combine to make this an outstanding place to inspire young naturalists and to encourage families to explore science and nature together. Pot up a plant or create a nature craft to take home with help from volunteer Discovery Docents and Teen Apprentices. Learn all about pollinators. The Discovery Garden, created for the youngest garden guests, provides hands on opportunities to investigate plant and animal life in an immersive landscape. Don’t miss the winding pathways and unique beauty of the Japanese Gardens, for which the BBG is noted.
