Sockeye salmon season extended on Skagit River

Anglers can continue to cast for sockeye salmon on the Skagit River after the state Department of Fish and Wildlife has again extended the season.

The sockeye fishery on the Skagit River from the West Mount Vernon Bridge to the Dalles Bridge in Concrete now runs through July 31.

A limit of four sockeye salmon with a minimum size of 12 inches can be retained daily and selective gear rules for salmon are not in effect.

All other salmon species must be released and night closures are in effect.

Current data indicates the river sport fishery has not reached the harvest guideline for sockeye, and incidental Chinook encounters remain within conservation goals.

The fishery will continue to be actively monitored by Fish and Wildlife, and anglers are asked to cooperate with creel personnel collecting catch information.

Monitoring and evaluation of fisheries is an important part of ensuring conservation goals for salmon are met as well as identifying additional fishing opportunities.

Anglers should note the possibility of closures as well as other management actions.
