LONGVIEW — Cowlitz County Superior Court granted an extreme risk protection order against an 18-year-old R.A. Long High School student, preventing him from having access to or purchasing firearms for one year due to threats made against the school.

The senior told Longview School District staff that he wants to die by suicide by cop and that he wants to do a school shooting while he still can before a medical condition makes it physically impossible, according to court records.

Extreme risk protection orders are filed by law enforcement in cases where mental health issues and clear evidence suggest a person would be a danger to the community if allowed access to firearms, Longview police Capt. Branden McNew said. The Longview Police Department filed for the protection order against the student last week.

The student was arrested in April for punching a guardian in the face. In may, he was admitted to PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center in Longview for a mental health evaluation after threatening a relative with a knife. He has had four threat assessments relating to school-shooting threats, dating back to fourth grade.

The student did not object to the order, according to court records.

McNew said the student is currently in mental health treatment.

The Longview School District could not comment of the specific case, but Director of Communications Rick Parrish said the district works closely with law enforcement on any safety issues.
