1. Camas father, son missing and presumed dead after boat capsizes near Columbia River Bar

A Camas father and son are missing and presumed dead after their 26-foot fishing boat capsized Saturday near the Columbia River Bar, west of Astoria, Ore.

Constantin Leahu, 43, and son Andrei, who turned 11 a day earlier, were on a birthday fishing trip when the incident occurred.

2. Vancouver police Chief Mori announces retirement after two years in the position

Vancouver police Chief Jeff Mori announced Wednesday he intends to retire in the fall, after two years at the helm of the department.

The city’s announcement cited Mori’s motivation to retire as personal, saying he wishes to spend more time with family and step away from the stress of the job.

3. Popular Clark County program Dozer Day expands nationally

Dozer Day is growing up.

What began nearly 20 years ago as a fun weekend event for elementary-age kids to try out construction equipment evolved into a career fair program run by the Nutter Family Foundation that provides hands-on opportunities for high school students to test-drive real construction equipment.

4. Longtime Columbia River basketball coaches David Long, Jim Sevall entering WIBCA Hall of Fame

Retirement has taken David Long out of Columbia River’s J. Hoover Gymnasium, but you can’t take Columbia River away from its former longtime boys basketball coach.

The 64-year-old has plenty of memorabilia displayed at his Goodyear, Ariz., home — photos, jerseys, banners, and yes, even a sideline chair — that remind him of his 32 years coaching basketball at River.

5. Vancouver neighborhood associations ask city to reconsider approval of warehouse

At least two west Vancouver neighborhood associations are appealing the city of Vancouver’s approval of a 561,800-square-foot warehouse planned for the Fruit Valley neighborhood.

San Francisco-based Prologis submitted development plans for the property, which lies just north of La Frambois Road and west of Fruit Valley Road, in the fall of 2022. Since then, neighborhood associations and environmental groups have objected to the project.
