Letter: Why the need for loud vehicles?

By Leonard Mills, VANCOUVER
Published: July 18, 2024, 6:00am

I wish I knew why, I probably never will, but why is it necessary for what are usually younger men to purchase a vehicle designed to be quiet and modify it to the point that it can be heard for blocks as they manage to get as many rpms as possible, making as much noise as possible out of that car of theirs?

Are they showing off, impressing their buddy or girlfriend or what? I can sit in my home, doors and windows closed, and hear a car coming up the street, slowing down at the busy corner (heaven forbid they would stop) then jet off with a screech of rubber and excessive noise from that expensive exhaust system they had installed.

Also, just for kicks, that motorcycle, be it a Harley Davidson or one of those pocket rockets, they can be heard for miles. Sorry, I guess I am old but I just don’t get it, do you?
