Letter: Electric vehicles pay their share

In response to Frank Gaffrey’s letter (“Gas tax not equitable,” Our Readers’ Views, July 10), he is exactly right but it is the electric vehicle owners that are getting the short end of the stick.

We own two EVs, one comparable to a full size and the other a compact. We pay an extra $250 per car for our tags under an item called “Electrification.”

In our case, the one car is driven 9,000 miles per year (in Washington) and the other 2,000. Comparable gas-powered cars would have fuel mileage of 30 miles per gallon and 40 mpg, respectively. At 49.4 cents Washington tax per gallon of gas, we paid more in taxes than if we had driven comparable gas-powered cars.

Referring to them weighing more, Washington has a weight surcharge and one of the cars pays that, as well.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
