The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is banning campfires, smoking and several other public use activities amid increased fire danger and dry weather conditions.
Campfire restrictions include homemade fires, stove fires, charcoal fires and pellet fires. Other prohibited activities include the use of explosives or pyrotechnics such as fireworks, welding equipment and torches, operating any internal or external combustion engines, and all off-road motorized vehicle use.
Violators could be fined, jailed or both.
Similar restrictions have also gone into effect in nearby protected areas such as the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and the Mount Hood National Forest.
