Construction of Highway 500 pedestrian crossing to begin Thursday

Construction of a new pedestrian crossing along state Highway 500 at Northeast Stapleton Road and 54th Avenue in Vancouver will begin Thursday.

Travelers can expect intermittent single-lane closures through December.

The project will restore the north/south connection across the intersection by adding a new overcrossing.

The new structure will incorporate straight ramps with a gradual incline and a wide turning radius so people riding bicycles or using wheelchairs or other mobility devices can easily climb the grade and make the turns comfortably.

Travelers will access the bridge via new bicycle lanes and along existing sidewalks from Northeast 54th Avenue and Stapleton Road.

The project is scheduled to be completed next spring.
