Letter: Roundup can be harmful

I frequently read the gardening column in The Columbian and I’m grateful for the many practical tips.

However, I was really disappointed to read an endorsement of Roundup. We are in the middle of a massive decline of much-needed insects and pollinators, and despite what the manufacturers of Roundup would like us to believe, their product is harmful and contributing to this crisis.

I think there may still be some very select times that Roundup is called for, but far too many folks use it as a matter of course in their home landscaping, leading to the sterile places that many home gardens are becoming.

I hope you will consider retracting your unqualified recommendation of Roundup and offering your readers a more ecologically informed and nuanced understanding of how to manage weeds and grasses without hurting our bees.
