Open fire ban in effect for Gifford Pinchot National Forest

Beginning today, open campfires will be prohibited throughout the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Fires will only be allowed in metal fire pits or rings in designated recreation sites.

Under the fire restrictions, wood and charcoal fires are only allowed in designated campgrounds and picnic areas with established metal fire pits or fire rings. Building and tending open fires, including charcoal briquettes, cooking fires and warming fires are prohibited until further notice.

However, portable cooking stoves, lanterns and heating devices that use liquid or bottle fuel, such as propane, are allowed.

The fire ban also prohibits smoking, except within buildings, enclosed vehicles and designated campgrounds. Violations can result in a $5,000 fine and/or up to six months in jail.

In areas where campfires are permitted, make sure fires are completely extinguished and cool to the touch before leaving the site. Use the metal campfire rings in the campgrounds.

There are additional fire restrictions in effect throughout the Gifford Pinchot National Forest for industrial activities, such as firewood cutting and timber operations. The use of chain saws is prohibited from 1-8 p.m. and a fire watch of at least one hour following use is required.
