Ozone levels, commonly known as smog, are expected to make the air in Clark County and the Portland-metro area unhealthy for sensitive groups, according to the Southwest Clean Air Agency.
“Ozone levels are expected to increase into the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” range at several locations in the Vancouver metropolitan area,” the agency said in a statement.
The agency issued an air quality advisory that runs through Tuesday evening while the region is experiencing extreme heat, according to a Monday statement. Health officials recommend sensitive groups — including older adults, children and people suffering from asthma or lung disease — limit outdoor activity while the pollution levels are elevated.
- Avoid any type of burning
- Avoid unnecessary engine idling
- Refuel your vehicle during cooler evening hours
- Limit driving by combining errands or using public transportation
- Don’t use gas-powered mowers and yard equipment
- Don’t paint or use aerosol sprays
Due to extremely dry conditions, Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli issued a total ban on recreational burning, including campfires, bonfires, firepits and outdoor fireplaces effective at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.
