Summer at Your Library is in full swing at Fort Vancouver Regional Libraries. The program runs from June 15 – August 15, and it encourages all ages to read, create, explore and learn. In addition to having a great excuse to do more reading this summer, you might even win a prize! To learn more about the program, be sure to stop by your local library or visit our website at www.fvrl.org.

When I was a little girl, my mom and I made regular trips to the library. Even though we moved several times, my mom made it a priority to visit the local public library and get us signed up for library cards. Nothing made me happier than checking out a big stack of books! To celebrate reading and making trips to the library, here is a list of recently published picture books, publisher annotations included.

Here’s to Summer at Your Library!

  • “A Best Friend for Bear” written and illustrated by Petr Horcek. “A charmingly earnest pair of bears find a friend where they least expect it in this heartwarming comedy of errors featuring the rich artwork of Petr Horacek.” (Candlewick Press)
  • “A Big Day for Bike” written by Emily Jenkins, illustrated by Brian Karas. “On her first day on the job, Bike, a community city bike, navigates the city of Seattle as she meets new passengers, visits exciting landmarks, and experiences all kinds of weather.” (Christy Ottaviano Books – Little Brown and Hachette)
  • “Home in a Lunchbox” written and illustrated by Cherry Mo. “When Jun moves from Hong Kong to America, the only words she knows are hello, thank you, I don’t know, and toilet. Her new school feels foreign and terrifying. But when she opens her lunchbox to find her favorite meals — like bao, dumplings, and bok choy — she realizes home isn’t so far away after all.” (Penguin Workshop)
  • “Peaches” written by Gabriele Davis, illustrated by Kim Holt. “A young Black girl pays homage to her late Mama and brings solace to her family through a treasured family recipe. Includes a recipe for peach cobbler.” (Harry N. Abrams)
  • “Perla the Mighty Dog” written by Isabel Allende, illustrated by Sandy Rodriguez. “Perla, the mighty dog, teaches her human brother, Nico Rico, how to use his superpowers to stand up to a bully. In a charming and poignant story about the bond between child and pet, Isabel Allende makes her children’s literary debut.” (Philomel Books)
  • “The Suitcase” written and illustrated by Daniela Sosa. “While spending the summer with his grandparents, who never do anything fun, a boy finds a suitcase filled with photos of people on the coolest adventures, but who could they be?” (Simon & Schuster)
