New on DVD: ‘Civil War’ a modern odyssey

A dystopian thriller tops the DVD releases for the week of July 9.

“Civil War”: A team of photojournalists capture the front lines of a war raging in the United States while traveling from New York to Washington, D.C.

“Much like America itself, writer-director Alex Garland’s ‘Civil War’ is a precarious sort of success almost in spite of itself, and despite being its own worst storytelling enemy,” writes Chicago Tribune critic Michael Phillips in his review. “How? “Challengers”: This steamy sports drama from filmmaker Luca Guadagnino centers on a love triangle set in the world of professional tennis. Starring Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor.

“The Boy and the Heron”: This Oscar winning animated feature from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli follows a young boy as he travels into a mysterious underworld to save his mother.

“Abigail”: Horror thriller in which a team of kidnappers tasked with guarding a young hostage in an isolated mansion discover that they’re locked in with a vampire.

“Unsung Hero”: Drama drawn from the true story of the Smallbone family, who emigrated to America in the early ‘90s and became successful musical artists in the Christian pop/rock realm.

“Tarot”: Members of a group of college friends start dying after having a tarot card reading in this horror flick.

“Boy Kills World”: Bill Skarsgard stars as a deaf and mute man out for vengeance after the murder of his family in this action thriller revenge comedy.

“Arena Wars”: Set two decades in the future, convicts are given the chance to win their freedom win their freedom if they can outlast seven deadly rooms in this action comedy.

“Fast Charlie”: Thriller starring Pierce Brosnan as a violent hit man trying to prove the identity of a headless corpse to secure his payday. Also starring Morena Baccarin and James Caan.

“Titanic: The Musical”: Recorded performance of the award-winning theatrical production inspired by the doomed 1912 voyage.

“True Detective: Night Country”: HBO’s anthology crime series heads to the frozen north of Alaska for Season 4. Starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.

“Food, Inc. 2”: Filmmakers Robert Kenner and Melissa Robledo reunite with investigative authors Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser as they delve into the food industry.

“Le Samouraï”: French director Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1967 classic starring Alain Delon as a stylish assassin receives an upgrade from the Criterion Collection with this new 4K digital restoration.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”: Set hundreds of years after the events of the last “Planet of the Apes” film, the story follows a young ape, Noa, as he encounters a charismatic ape king, Proximus Caesar, and fights to save his clan.
