Letter: GOP lacks principles

By Carrie Parks, Vancouver

The Clark County Republican Party has their core principles on their website. Two of these principles are:

“EQUALITY UNDER LAW — Public officials should not exempt themselves from our laws or regulations.”

“ACCOUNTABILITY — Public officials should be held accountable to their oath of office, regardless of party affiliation.”

Yet how many of these “principled” Republicans continue to support Trump? A man who has been indicted for 91 crimes? A man who was convicted of sexual abuse and defamation against E. Jean Carroll? Trump took an oath as president to protect and defend our country, yet he incited his followers to attack congressmembers. He sat watching television for three hours doing nothing while his supporters screamed about killing Nancy Pelosi and hanging Mike Pence. He took classified documents containing nuclear secrets and left them strewn around Mar-a-Lago, where anyone could have seen them. In other words, he violated his oath of office and endangered our country.

Now Trump claims that he should have total immunity from any prosecution, even if it means he can assassinate political rivals. All the while he hypocritically whines about a “witch hunt” against him.

Local Republicans should seriously question whether they really have any principles at all.
