Men’s basketball: Trio leads Oregon State to 84-71 victory over Arizona State

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Jordan Pope had 19 points, Tyler Bilodeau scored 18 and Michael Rataj added a double-double as Oregon State rolled to an 84-71 victory over Arizona State on Saturday night.

Pope made 8 of 13 shots with a 3-pointer for the Beavers (11-9, 3-6 Pac-12 Conference), who finished off a sweep in the desert. Oregon State upset No. 9 Arizona 83-80 last time out on Pope’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer. Pope added six assists and four rebounds against the Sun Devils. Bilodeau sank 4 of 6 shots with a 3-pointer and 9 of 12 at the free-throw line, adding seven rebounds. Rataj pitched in with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Christian Wright scored 10 off the bench.

Jose Perez was 9 for 9 at the foul line, scoring 19 to lead the Sun Devils (11-9, 5-4). Frankie Collins had 14 points and six steals. Shawn Phillips Jr. scored 13 off the bench on 6-for-7 shooting before fouling out.

Bilodeau had nine points, Pope scored eight and Oregon State raced out to a 21-7 lead with 11:44 left in the first half. Pope totaled 13 by halftime, Bilodeau scored 11 and the Beavers took a 44-29 lead into the locker room. Perez had nine points for Arizona State, which shot 32.8% and missed 9 of 10 from 3-point range.

KC Ibekwe opened the second half with a dunk for Oregon State and the Sun Devils got no closer than 11 from there. The Beavers took their biggest lead at 71-49 on a Wright layup with 6:15 left to play and improved to 10-3 this season when scoring at least 70.

Oregon State snapped a five-game losing streak when it beat Arizona. The Beavers’ last victory over a top-10 team came against No. 7 Arizona in 2015.

Arizona State rallied from 16 points down to beat the Beavers 74-69 in Corvallis last season.

Oregon State honored its 1963 Final Four team during the game with former players Rex Benner, Mel Counts, Jim Jarvis, Jim Kraus, Steve Pauly and Frank Peters in attendance.

Oregon State travels to play UCLA on Thursday. Arizona State will host Stanford on Thursday.
