Letter: Protect mobile home residents

By Michael Schrader, Vancouver
Published: January 26, 2024, 6:00am

The idea that many seniors may lose their homes because some greedy landowner is raising their mobile home park rents by over 100 percent is totally disgusting. While I understand that landowner expenses like taxes and insurance have risen, they haven’t increased nearly that much.

May I suggest that the possibility of eminent domain be used to prevent the senior residents of Woodland East Mobile Home Park from losing their mobile homes that most of them own. The two conditions that must be met for eminent domain are that the property acquired must be used for public use and the state or local government must pay “just compensation” in exchange for the property.

While I’m not sure that a mobile home park would be considered “public use,” a finding could be made that the public would benefit by not adding more potential homeless to the community

Something has to be done to prevent over 150 seniors from losing their homes.
