Third landslide stops Amtrak services from Portland to Seattle through Friday

LONGVIEW — Debris from a landslide south of Kelso on Wednesday halted Amtrak passenger rail service between Portland and Seattle — the third slide in recent days.

According to Janet Matkin from the Washington Department of Transportation, the landslide was caused by recent bad weather and a housing development “on top of a bluff” in Kelso early Wednesday in the same location as the previous two.

Passenger rail service should return to normal at 8:30 a.m. Friday after BNSF, the owner of the tracks, called for a 48-hour moratorium on passenger rail service, their protocol after landslides.

All trains north of Seattle and south of Portland are operating normally, Amtrak’s website reports.

No injuries occurred during the incident, and affected passengers will be offered bus service.

Landslides were also reported on Friday night and Sunday morning, which paused Amtrak services until Tuesday morning.
